Bike advocates count it as Santa Ana's fifth fatal bicycle crash in roughly four months on a 40-mph corridor with no marked bike lanes.

Three teenagers died when a Ford Edge carrying four teens left southbound Interstate 5 near the Lincoln Avenue off-ramp in Anaheim about 3:15 a.m. on Sept. 3, 2026: Victor Hugo Delgado, 17, and Robert Miguel Gutierrez-Avalos, 16, of Santa Ana, and Levi Jacob Flores, 15, of Garden Grove. CHP says none wore seat belts and speed is a possible factor; the driver has not been identified and no charges have been filed. The fourth teen remained in critical condition as of NBC LA family interviews aired Sept. 5.

Orange County's e-bike and e-moto safety crisis remains active into September 2026, with at least four confirmed fatalities this year and 26 open OCDA parent investigations. AB 1569, requiring a grades 7–12 e-bike safety curriculum by March 1, 2028, was chaptered Aug. 27 as state law, and the OCDA's first E-Bike and E-Moto Buy Back — gift cards of 200 to 1,000 dollars per device — is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13 at Angel Stadium.

Both deaths remain under investigation; identities and the relationship between the two individuals have not been publicly released.

A pedestrian, Cesar Amilcar Zuniga Ruiz, 23, of Los Angeles, was killed in a hit-and-run at Ortega Highway and La Novia Avenue in San Juan Capistrano at about 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 17, 2026; Anthony Konstantine Kalomas, 85, of San Juan Capistrano was arrested the next day and booked on felony hit-and-run. As of Sept. 5 the OCDA had not announced a filing, arraignment date, or bail.

Costa Mesa's City Council unanimously adopted an updated Sixth Cycle Housing Element on September 1, 2026, and is scheduled to vote on the Fairview Developmental Center Specific Plan (~4,000 homes) on September 15; HCD has indicated the revised element could be certified if remaining rezones including Fairview are completed, but the AG lawsuit filed in July remains active.

Orange County's 2026 West Nile virus season has escalated sharply: OCHCA's dashboard (data as of Sept. 3) now shows 11 confirmed human cases and 0 deaths, up from one case reported Aug. 6. OCMVCD has completed two waves of overnight truck ULV treatments and conducted a third wave Sept. 2–4; statewide CDPH counted 65 symptomatic human cases as of Aug. 28.

Rodney Otis Rich, 37, remains held on felony attempted-murder and related charges following the August 18 shooting in a Costa Mesa Stater Bros. parking lot that left the victim permanently paralyzed; a pretrial hearing was scheduled for August 28 at West Justice Center, and no public report of that hearing's outcome has emerged. His mother, Tamie Sue Walker, 63, was charged only with misdemeanor resisting and released without bond.

Shalia Deciderio, 21, of Rancho Santa Margarita was killed the night of Aug. 20, 2026, when the Infiniti she was riding in left the road and hit a tree at Los Alisos Boulevard and Mustang Run in Mission Viejo — the entrance to Trabuco Hills High School — in what OCSD says was a street race between two cars. Both drivers were arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence: Jaime Rojas, 20, of Mission Viejo, who drove the crashed car and was hospitalized, and Aiden Deciderio, 20 — the victim's younger brother — who drove the other car. As of Aug. 22 prosecutors had not announced charges, bail, or court dates.

Duo Ying Liang, 60, of Mission Viejo was struck around 9:19 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2026 at Pacific Crest Drive and Glenwood Drive in Mission Viejo and died the next day. Caleb Thomas Baeza, 18, of Mission Viejo was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into Orange County Jail; charges have not yet been announced.

Ethan Anthony Vidal, 18, remains in custody charged with murder in the Aug. 9–10 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Janely Gutierrez at a Garden Grove residence; arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 27 at the West Justice Center in Westminster.

Lake Forest motorcyclist David Matthew Atwood Sr., 55, died August 19 after a suspected DUI driver struck him on El Toro Road near Creekside; suspect Matthew Christian Biedebach, 21, is booked in Orange County Jail. OCSD's Major Accident Investigation Team investigation is ongoing.

OC Health Care Agency has confirmed six measles cases in Orange County in 2026, including a locally acquired adult case announced August 19 with multiple public exposure sites across Anaheim, Orange, and Fountain Valley. The original travel-associated toddler case remains the index event; the situation is active and expanding.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department has reported two in-custody deaths at OC jail facilities in July 2026 — one at the Intake Release Center (IRC) on July 1 and a second at the Theo Lacy Facility on July 10. Both decedents have been identified; autopsies and OCDA investigations are ongoing.

Jianquan Bo, 66, of Irvine remains held without bail at West Valley Detention Center pending a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 17, 2026, in the July 29 abduction and killing of Shukur Aikebaer in Chino Hills; no new developments have surfaced from the Aug. 12 pre-preliminary hearing. Joel Obed MendezCamargo, 22, faces felony gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI-causing-injury charges in the August 6 death of Christopher Dougherty, 73, at El Toro Road and Via Ridgeline Road in Lake Forest; arraignment is continued to August 26, 2026 at Harbor Justice Center with bail set at $100,000.

Irvine PD released a critical-incident video on August 14, 2026, showing two officers fired eight shots at Daniel Alfons Meltvedt, 20, after an approximately one-hour standoff; Meltvedt's family remains critical of the police response. Both the department and the Orange County DA say the investigation could take up to a year.

A former Garden Grove police officer, Roberto Machuca, 32, of Riverside, faces five felony counts filed July 29, 2026, by the Orange County District Attorney in connection with an alleged illegal sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female Police Explorer. Machuca pleaded not guilty at arraignment; bail was set at $100,000 with orders to surrender firearms and his passport, and a pretrial hearing is scheduled at the West Justice Center in Westminster.

San Clemente's updated Coastal Strategic Plan, briefed to the City Council by Coastal Administrator Leslea Meyerhoff and reported Sept. 5, 2026, sets an interim goal of 100 feet of beach width within 10 years and 200 to 250 feet within 20; May monitoring found widths from essentially nothing to 179 feet. Sand would come from a 5,000-cubic-yard SCOUP placement this fall, Army Corps cycles of 251,000 cubic yards every five to six years starting 2029, and at least 540,000 cubic yards promised by OCTA by fall 2028, but the city lacks its roughly $15 million share for future Corps work and is asking voters for a 1% sales tax in November. Two days after the briefing, Hurricane Marie's swell put salt water on the LOSSAN tracks and shut down Metrolink service through the city.

Santa Ana voters will decide Measure N on Nov. 3, 2026, which would remove the 2029 step-down and 2039 sunset on the 1.5-cent local sales tax approved as Measure X in 2018, keeping the city's combined rate at 9.25%, tied for the highest in Orange County, and preserving about $84 million a year. The council placed the measure on the ballot 5-2, with David Penaloza and Jessie Lopez opposed. An Orange County Sheriff's Department warrant operation on Sept. 3, 2026 across Orange and Los Angeles counties recovered about 2,400 suspected stolen catalytic converters valued near $4.3 million, two unregistered firearms and more than $105,000 in cash after a three-month North Investigations case.
