Ethan Anthony Vidal, 18, remains in custody on a murder charge following the shooting death of Janely Gutierrez, 17, at a Garden Grove residence in the early hours of Aug. 10. No new developments have been reported since the charge filing on Aug. 12; the case is proceeding through the Orange County court system with arraignment approaching.

Garden Grove Police officers responded to a medical-aid call at approximately 11:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at a residence on the 8800 block of Hewitt Place. Officers found Gutierrez bleeding profusely from the head. She was transported and died Aug. 10, according to the OC Register. Police report that the two were involved in an altercation prior to the shooting.

Vidal was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide. On Aug. 12, the Orange County District Attorney's Office charged him with murder, with a personal firearm-discharge causing death enhancement under California Penal Code § 12022.53. He made an initial court appearance in Santa Ana that same day. Arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 27 at the West Justice Center in Westminster. According to Patch, no motive has been publicly released.

The Aug. 27 arraignment is the next scheduled court milestone. A formal motive and additional case details are expected to emerge through court filings.
