The investigation into the Sept. 4, 2026, fatal bicycle crash at McFadden Avenue and Fairview Street in Santa Ana remains open as of Sept. 8. No arrests or citations have been issued against the driver. SAPD's Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case; the lead investigator is Officer J. Hernandez (714-245-8217).

At approximately 6:54 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, a driver struck a 72-year-old man who had begun riding his bicycle westbound on McFadden Avenue from Fairview Street. SAPD motor officers working a DUI enforcement detail at that intersection witnessed the collision and immediately rendered aid alongside Orange County Fire Authority personnel. The man was found in the roadway with significant injuries and died despite lifesaving measures at the scene.

According to SAPD, the driver remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and showed no signs of impairment. As of the department's Sept. 5 public account, the driver had not been cited or arrested. No update changing that status has been reported.

The victim's identity has been withheld by SAPD pending next-of-kin notification. No subsequent release of his name has appeared in available reporting.

Bike advocates, including BikinginLA and New Santa Ana, count this as Santa Ana's fifth fatal bicycle crash in approximately four months. The McFadden/Fairview corridor carries a posted 40-mph speed limit and has no marked bike lanes. That tally is an advocacy count and has not been independently confirmed by SAPD or OCTA.

No charges, traffic citations, or changes to the investigation status have been reported since SAPD's initial release. Further updates are expected if the Collision Investigation Unit concludes its review or if the district attorney's office takes action.
