Meltvedt called 911 himself, reported being armed with a knife, and said he wanted to die. He was off antipsychotic medication at the time. After approximately one hour of negotiation, he ran toward officers and two of them opened fire.

According to the OC Register, body-camera audio captures eight gunshots fired by two officers. Meltvedt called 911 himself around 11:45 a.m. on July 21, near Silkwood and Sungate in Turtle Rock, telling dispatchers he was armed with a kitchen knife and that he wanted to die. He was autistic and had been off antipsychotic medication at the time of the encounter.
The I-CARE mental health team was on scene, but the Crisis Negotiation Team took lead because Meltvedt was armed. Officers discussed less-lethal options including a taser and a 40mm sponge round; Meltvedt reportedly stated he would rather be shot than tased. After approximately one hour, he ran toward officers, and two of them fired.
Meltvedt's father, who attempted to intervene during the standoff and was prevented from doing so by officers, remains critical of the police response following the video release, according to the OC Register. The family had previously noted that officers had responded to calls at the same residence on multiple prior occasions, raising questions about whether familiarity with Meltvedt's condition informed the response.
California Penal Code § 832.7 generally requires release of body-camera footage within 45 days of an officer-involved shooting. The August 14 video release falls within that window, measured from the July 21 incident. The OCDA has not issued a public criminal-review determination. Both agencies have acknowledged a timeline of up to one year for a full investigative conclusion.
