The Gibby Fire is 100% contained at 230 acres as of September 14, 2026, per Cal Fire's incident page. No injuries were reported at any point during the incident, and no structures were threatened. The cause of ignition remains under investigation.

The fire ignited at 3:02 p.m. on September 2 at the intersection of Ortega Highway (SR-74) and Gibby Road in unincorporated south Orange County, within the Rancho Mission Viejo area near the Orange–Riverside County line. An initial smoke-column estimate of 450 acres was withdrawn; the fire was remapped at 216 acres on the afternoon of September 2 and held at 230 acres from September 3 onward. Containment rose from 0% late September 2 to 5% (September 3 morning), 53% (September 3 evening), 78% (September 4 morning), 88% (September 4 evening), 90% at 8:28 a.m. September 5, and 95% by 10:03 a.m. September 7 — reaching 100% on September 14.

Shelter-in-place orders covering Caspers Wilderness Park, Rancho Carrillo, and Riverside County zone RVC-2074 were lifted at approximately 8 p.m. on September 2, once forward progress was confirmed stopped. No evacuation orders or warnings were issued at any point. SR-74 was closed eastbound at Gateway and westbound at Grand (Lake Elsinore) during the initial response; no subsequent closure notices were issued after the perimeter was established.

OCFA held jurisdiction under a unified command that included Cal Fire, USFS, OCSD, OC Parks, and CHP. Incident Commander Cheyne Maule led the response.

The cause of ignition remains under investigation as of the final Cal Fire update.
