The Gibby Fire is 90% contained at 230 acres as of 8:28 a.m. September 5, 2026, according to Cal Fire. Forward progress was stopped the evening of September 2 and has not resumed. No injuries have been reported and no structures were threatened at any point. A NASA VIIRS satellite hotspot (0.37 MW FRP, nominal confidence) was detected at 10:34 UTC on September 5 within Orange County, consistent with residual heat along the contained perimeter rather than active spread.

The fire ignited at 3:02 p.m. on September 2 at the intersection of Ortega Highway (SR-74) and Gibby Road in unincorporated south Orange County, within the Rancho Mission Viejo area near the Orange–Riverside County line. An initial smoke-column estimate of 450 acres was withdrawn; the fire was remapped at 216 acres on the afternoon of September 2 and held at 230 acres from September 3 onward. Containment rose from 0% late September 2 to 5% (September 3 morning), 53% (September 3 evening), 78% (September 4 morning), 88% (September 4 evening), and 90% at 8:28 a.m. September 5.

Shelter-in-place orders covering Caspers Wilderness Park, Rancho Carrillo, and Riverside County zone RVC-2074 were lifted at approximately 8 p.m. on September 2, once forward progress was confirmed stopped. No evacuation orders or warnings were issued at any point. SR-74 was closed eastbound at Gateway and westbound at Grand (Lake Elsinore) but has since reopened per prior reporting.

OCFA holds jurisdiction under a unified command that includes Cal Fire, USFS, OCSD, OC Parks, and CHP. Incident Commander Cheyne Maule has led the response. Cal Fire's High Fire Danger advisory remained active for both inland and coastal Orange County through at least September 4, reflecting continued dry, warm conditions across the region.
