The criminal case stemming from the June 13, 2021 fatal crash on northbound I-5 in Irvine is closed at the trial level. On Sept. 2, 2026, an Orange County Superior Court jury acquitted Jim Christopher Rosado, 38, of second-degree murder in the death of his niece, Vanessa Ramirez, 18. The jury did convict Rosado of DUI-of-a-drug causing injury with a great-bodily-injury (GBI) enhancement for passenger Sarah Portillo, 19. He was sentenced immediately to five years — fully satisfied by 2,194 days of pretrial custody credit — and released the same day.

The collision occurred June 13, 2021 on northbound I-5 between Yale Avenue and Culver Drive in Irvine. Ramirez was killed; Portillo sustained serious injuries. The California Highway Patrol and the Orange County District Attorney's Office investigated and prosecuted the case. Toxicology results presented at trial showed the presence of methamphetamine, amphetamine, and morphine/heroin in Rosado's system at the time of the crash.

Trial opened approximately Aug. 19, 2026, before OC Superior Court. The central question before the jury was whether the facts supported second-degree (implied-malice) murder — a theory the prosecution advanced based on Rosado's alleged knowledge of the dangers of impaired driving — or the lesser DUI charge. The jury rejected the murder count but found Rosado guilty on the DUI-causing-injury count with the GBI enhancement for Portillo.

With the sentence satisfied and Rosado released, no further custodial proceedings are expected unless an appeal or other post-conviction motion is filed.
